At the age of five, Virginia Elizabeth Davis already knew she wanted to be an actress. Following her dream, she graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. With legs that go on forever, and stunning beauty, she signed with the Zoli modeling agency in New York, with an agenda to pursue acting.

Her break came when she landed a roll in “Tootsie” (1982), playing a soap-opera actress that shared a dressing room with Dustin Hoffman in drag. Initially she was cast for her 6 foot tall physique, and while Dustin Hoffman is just 5’6, you can imagine the visual joke. Geena pulled off the role with comedic innocence and encouraging reviews. Her genuine talent won her part in the cult hit “Buffalo Bill” (1983).

In the remake of “The Fly” (1986) she proved that she could flip easily between drama and comedy. This lead to her roll in the highly successful, dark comedy “Beetlejuice” (1988). That same year she was to play a dog trainer in the “The Accidental Tourist”. Her performance earned her the Oscar for best supporting actress, and Geena was now on the Hollywood A-list.

Geena stared opposite Susan Sarandon in the highly acclaimed and controversial films of 1991, “Thelma and Louise”. Both Davis and Sarandon were nominated for best actress Oscars, but probably canceled each other out of the race, allowing Jody foster to take home the prize. She was then offered the part, that Sharon Stone eventually played, in “Basic Instinct”, but considered the roll ‘objectionable’. Instead she accepted the staring roll in the box office hit “A League of Their own” with Tom Hanks and Madonna. Unfortunately her next 3 flicks “Hero” (1992), “Speechless” (1994), and “Cutthroat Island” (1995) crashed at the box office. However, 1996’s powerful action-thriller “The Long Kiss Goodnight”, received rave reviews.

Geena’s talents go beyond acting. She is a member of Mensa, the international society whose members’ intelligence exceeds that of 98% of the population. An accomplished musician, able to play the organ, piano, flute and drums. Her creative aptitude is expressed in small time inventions, and she is a talented cartoonist. She also ran her own successful production company on the Twentieth Century Fox lot. Such combinations of sex appeal, intelligence, and sheer talent are virtually unheard of in Hollywood. Geena Davis is truly a rare commodity.
